The Basic Technique of Oil Painting: Mountains

was quite like cake icing.

But in the third month, a beautiful thing happened.  It finally clicked what I was doing wrong.  You see, I was just grabbing paint onto my knife and quickly trying to paint without hardly taking a breath.  This step had me petrified.

Over the past 10 years I've seen students struggle to make beautiful snow-covered mountains.

I struggled as well when I first started.  In fact, I nearly gave up in the first three months as those dog-gone mountains I could ever paint.  Lt seems I could never lighten my touch enough for the knife.  Everything was quite like cake icing.  But in the third month, a beautiful thing happened.  It finally clicked what I was doing wrong.  You see, I was just grabbing paint onto my knife and quickly trying to paint without hardly taking a breath.  This step had me petrified.

What I learned was to simply slow down.  Take a breath.  Just put the knife on the canvas, relax and then glide over the canvas ever so lightly.
