The Basic Technique of Oil Painting: Trees

I only wish I had this Video when I was learning.

Besides mountains being tough when I first began oil painting, so were evergreen trees.  So this is where we begin....painting those ever present trees.  We show you not one but several different techniques on

painting evergreen trees.  How to load the paints, what colors to mix and especially how to apply the brush to the canvas.

Trees can be made with a fan brush, big 1 or 2" brush, mops, large filberts, small filberts.  and so forth.  We show you many different trees and many different ways to paint them.  Special attention is also given in how to highlight the trees.  That's the key.  It's fairly easy to paint the general shape of the tree, but the magic occurs in the highlighting.

You may have heard the saying, thick paint sticks to thin paint and thin paint thicks to thick paint.  This entire style of painting relies on this theory.  The way we can layer paint on top of paint, is through adding thinner paints on top of thicker paints.  I show how to put a very thin coat of medium onto the canvas and then a thick layer of paint on top of the medium.  Then we had the base color for each of our elements, followed by a thin highlight or highlights.

Each step is carefully shown so that you not only see, but understand what and why we're using the colors we've chosen and how to thin the paints.

This is an excellent video in which beginners can learn the basic techniques even if they've never painted before, or even so much as held a paint brush.  It is on DVD-R and is over 2-hours long.  It assumes the student has had no previous knowledge or experience in its instruction.
